rty remains one of the most obstinate barriers. Children living through econ
omic fragility, political instability, conflict or natural disaster are more
likely to be cut off from schooling – as are those with disabilities, or fr
om ethnic minorities. In some countries, education opportunities for girls r
emain severely limited.</p> <p>Even in schools, a lack of trained teachers,
inadequate education materials and poor infrastructure make learning diffic
ult for many students. Others come to class too hungry, ill or exhausted fro
m work or household tasks to benefit from their lessons.</p> <p>Compounding
these inequities is a digital divide of growing concern: Some two thirds of
the world’s school-aged children do not have internet connection in their h
omes, restricting their opportunities to further their learning and skills d
evelopment.</p> <p>Without quality education, children face considerable ba
rriers to employment and earning potential later in life. They are more like
ly to suffer adverse health outcomes and less likely to participate in decis

al communities, we have realized that many schools do not have adequate latr
ine facilities. The absence of proper toilets forces pupils to leave school
premises or use nearby bushes to relieve themselves. This is particularly ch
allenging for young children and even more so for girls, who are disproporti
onately affected by the lack of privacy and hygiene.</p> <h3>Sanitation and
learning outcomes</h3> <p>Poor sanitation and hygiene have a direct impact
on students’ health and academic performance. Children frequently fall ill
due to unhygienic conditions, leading to regular absenteeism and reduced con
centration in class. Teachers are also affected, and the wider community con
tinues to face preventable health risks.</p> <h3>Improving hygiene through
safe facilities</h3> <p>This program aims to improve sanitation and hygiene
for students, teachers and the surrounding community through the constructi
on of improved pit latrines within school compounds. With proper facilities
in place, pupils will no longer need to run into bushes or rush home during
lessons to use the toilet.</p> <h3>Preventing disease and protecting dignit
y</h3> <p>By improving access to clean and safe sanitation, we aim to reduc
e the spread of diseases such as dysentery, cholera and typhoid, which are c
ommon in areas with poor hygiene infrastructure. Clean latrines help protect
the dignity, health and safety of all learners, especially girls.</p> <h3>
Project scope and infrastructure</h3> <p>The project plans to construct ful
ly functional and separate latrine blocks for girls and boys. Facilities wil
l include handwashing sinks, a water tank, bathroom areas, mirrors and prope
r ventilation. One spacious toilet with handrails and safe access will be bu
ilt to accommodate pupils with physical disabilities. Electricity and overhe
ad lighting will be installed to provide sufficient light and warm water.</p
