School Latrine Program
The challenge of poor school sanitation
Through our work in rural communities, we have realized that many schools do not have adequate latrine facilities. The absence of proper toilets forces pupils to leave school premises or use nearby bushes to relieve themselves. This is particularly challenging for young children and even more so for girls, who are disproportionately affected by the lack of privacy and hygiene.
Sanitation and learning outcomes
Poor sanitation and hygiene have a direct impact on students’ health and academic performance. Children frequently fall ill due to unhygienic conditions, leading to regular absenteeism and reduced concentration in class. Teachers are also affected, and the wider community continues to face preventable health risks.
Improving hygiene through safe facilities
This program aims to improve sanitation and hygiene for students, teachers and the surrounding community through the construction of improved pit latrines within school compounds. With proper facilities in place, pupils will no longer need to run into bushes or rush home during lessons to use the toilet.
Preventing disease and protecting dignity
By improving access to clean and safe sanitation, we aim to reduce the spread of diseases such as dysentery, cholera and typhoid, which are common in areas with poor hygiene infrastructure. Clean latrines help protect the dignity, health and safety of all learners, especially girls.
Project scope and infrastructure
The project plans to construct fully functional and separate latrine blocks for girls and boys. Facilities will include handwashing sinks, a water tank, bathroom areas, mirrors and proper ventilation. One spacious toilet with handrails and safe access will be built to accommodate pupils with physical disabilities. Electricity and overhead lighting will be installed to provide sufficient light and warm water.
Cost and impact
The construction of a complete school latrine facility is estimated to cost approximately KES 300,000 (around USD 3,000). Every contribution helps improve the living and learning conditions of pupils and strengthens health standards within the wider community.
